"DO I HAVE A GOOD SITE FOR WIND POWER?"

Wind powered battery charging systems can be cost-effective if the average wind speed is nine miles per hour (mph) or more at the location of the wind generator. If you are using wind in combination with photovoltaic power, it may be cost effective if good wind is available only during part of the year. When the wind speed doubles, the power delivered is eight times as great . Most wind generators are designed to deliver maximum power at a wind speed of 30 mph. At 15 mph, they will deliver about 1/8 their rated power. A wind generator should be mounted at least 20 feet higher than any obstruction within 300 feet to avoid turbulence. The power output of a wind generator will decrease roughly 3% for every 1000 feet of elevation.

Small Wind Turbines for Off Shore Platforms

Close to 500 oil platforms located in the Gulf of Mexico use both small wind and photovoltaics panels to provide power for SCADA systems and/or platform lighting. Because of the product reliability, companies from Exxon/Mobil to Kerr-McGee exclusively use Southwest Windpower’s small wind generators for providing power on their offshore platforms. Rather than consuming oil with thermal electric generators, these companies and others have found it more cost effective to use renewable energy. Furthermore, small wind has become a standard on these platforms as it offers greater system reliability and a reduced photovoltaic footprint on the platform. This reduces the wind loading on the structure.

Can Small Wind Work for You?

Small wind systems are extremely effective for providing small amounts of power on platforms even in volatile environments. Special explosion resistant diversion loads safely dissipate any extra energy not used on the platform. The AIR-Industrial uses a sealed alternator design that is free from potential arcing. Furthermore, the turbine’s cast aluminum frame and powder-coated body make it resistant to the corrosive elements. Larger wind turbines with higher output are also available. Cathodic protection is a method of preventing corrosion of metal pipes, industrial systems or other infrastructure that is submerged in water or buried in the earth. Corrosion is prevented by running a low-voltage electric current to the metal (cathode) that needs protection. Wind power charged battery banks perform beautifully in this application.

Can wind turbines be used for selling back to the grid? Yes there are basically two different options such as wind turbines with built in inverters or supplying an independent inverter such as SMA’s Windy Boy Inverters. You could still have access to your wind energy should there be a problem with the inverter. Should there be a problem with the built in inverter you would have to hire someone to lower your wind turbine so that you could return it to have it worked on.
